Advice From The Experts•Guides

How to pick the right Wedding Makeup Artist. Part 1.

January 29, 2021

Beauty & Grace. How to pick the right Wedding Makeup Artist. Part 1.

  1. “Find a makeup artist whose style you can relate to.”
  2. “Before signing the contract, talk to the actual make-up artist that will be doing your makeup.”
  3. “Ask for a trial asap.”
  4. “Take some time first to understand your own signature makeup style.”

We’ve collected expert tips from fellow wedding and event industry professionals to help newlyweds-to-be on how to pick the right wedding makeup artist.

THE ART OF MAKEUP AND HAIR

1. “Find a makeup artist whose style you can relate to.”

MaryEllen, the owner of The Art of Makeup and Hair, has over 20 years of experience in the makeup and hair industry. Specializing in bridal, beauty, and editorial mobile services. On your wedding day enjoy the best of professional beauty services in your own home or event location. MaryEllen also specializes in destination wedding services to exclusive locations worldwide.

MaryEllen‘s experience is diverse, having been published in Vogue Italia, Wedding Planner Magazine, various commercials, music videos, and Blogs.

EXPERT ADVICE:

“Find a Makeup Artist whose style you can relate to. I’m sure we can agree you want your fiance to recognize you when you walk down the aisle, so finding an artist that speaks to your sense of style is so important.

If you don’t wear much makeup on a daily basis, it would be a good idea not to choose a makeup artist who primarily does bold, glamorous looks because more than likely you will look, and feel overdone on your big day.

Consider sanitation and proper hygiene. With Coronavirus being so rampant, it’s important now more than ever to be aware of your artist’s sanitation practices when it comes to your makeup application.

Big no no’s would include double-dipping into the product, not brush cleansing, blowing on brushes, and reusing disposables like sponges.”

MAKE MY DAY NEW YORK

2. “Before signing the contract, talk to the actual make-up artist that will be doing your makeup.”

Make My Day New York is a team of professionals united with one main goal – to deliver professional service to their clients with an individual approach, care for their clients, and favorite unique style and service in work.

They work with everyone, they do not divide people into classes and nationalities. They are professionals with years of experience, great backgrounds, and success in their work. They want to make their services easy to order, with a personalized approach, and with all the high standards of the best service in New York.

EXPERT ADVICE:

“The only tip that I think works best is finding a makeup artist with the portfolio you like; before signing the bridal contract, talk with your future makeup artist. If you like the person by phone or facetime, you will probably like this person on the day of your wedding.”

3. “Ask for a trial asap.”

Amy A. is the Logistics Lead & Associate Planner at Peppermint & Co. Event Consultants.

With her 8+ experience in event planning and on the catering side, together with the logistics team, she shares her tips on how to pick the right wedding caterer and things that you should ask/discuss/go-over with your potential caterer.

EXPERT ADVICE:

Research their portfolios and check out their reviews; they may have beautiful craftsmanship; however, their professionalism attitude may not match.

Once committed to your make up artist, ask for a demo so there are no shocks on an actual day.

Most makeup artists can do a range of different skin tones and different looks, ensuring you have seen examples from your makeup artist of their own work for the particular look you want.

For brides with the most sensitive skin, ensure that you go over the products that will be used on your face to ensure that you don’t break out or get a reaction from them.

WEDDING MAKEUP TIPS: WEARING A MASK, ACNE-PRONE, OILY, SENSITIVE SKIN

You might want to consider having two trials, swishing the products to see if you react, and the second is the actual trial.

Also, ask about how long your “chosen look” will take. This will be able to help you plan your timeline better.

4. “Take some time first to understand your own signature makeup style.”

With over 5 years of experience in events across the Americas and Europe, Hana J. understands that the secret to the best events is about meticulous preparation and the management of the unexpected. As well as adding that touch of creative sparkle!

Hana J. is a resident Event Planner and Coordinator at Peppermint & Co. Ltd. Event Consultants. Together with the planning team, she shares her tips on how to pick the right wedding caterer and things that you should ask/discuss/go-over with your potential caterer.

EXPERT ADVICE:

Everyone wants their wedding day to go smoothly. Nice hair, gorgeous skin, and a classy setup. Take some time to find your signature makeup style. You don’t want to look like a stranger on your wedding day.

Understanding your own style will make it easier for you to communicate or show it to your potential makeup artist.

15 THINGS NOT TO FORGET WHEN WEDDING PLANNING

It is important to research to find something and someone that doesn’t stray too far from your everyday look.

While you are probably focusing on the wedding looks artists created, it is good to go through their entire portfolio. It is crucial to find something you love.

WEDDING HACKS THAT WILL SAVE YOU MONEY: TOP 30

Understand that a makeup artist is also creative; they will provide you with some input and suggestions.

Have a great conversation with your makeup artist and an open discussion where you don’t sacrifice the look that you are going for and consider the expert’s advice.
