Best Disposable Plates For your Wedding | Tips, Pros & Cons

Best Disposable Plates For your Wedding. In this post (and video!), we will be reviewing the Amscan Brand Premium Plasticware Products that you might be interested in!

We want to acknowledge that plastic wares tend to be wasteful; however, the reality is these disposable plates might be the best option for your wedding if you are on a tight budget.

We do not always suggest plasticware, but we understand that you might want to consider it an alternative to real china if you are extra budget-conscious. Choose wisely and do what works for you best while being eco-conscious. In the City of Toronto, these plastic plates go into the “recycling bin.”

Let’s put things in perspective in terms of pricing;

PLASTICWARE vs. REAL CHINA

A dinner china plate will rent at about $0.40 on the low end for a basic style and can be upwards of $4 or even $6 each, depending on the design.

We love good china (if you have seen events that we worked on, stylish china is one of our staples!). Now yes, it might be cheaper to rent basic china. But, you also have to consider other things like delivery, set-up, and pick-up. These extra fees can easily add up. Some china rental places also have minimums, which might be hard to reach if you plan an intimate or micro event.

The plastic disposables are, as they are called, “disposable.” So there is the ease in set-up, assembly, and clean-up, and that convenience is worth looking at when considering the costs.

Now let’s get started with my fave plasticware (if we ever need to use them!)

Ornate Heavy Weight Plastic Dinner Plate by Amscan - Best Disposable Plates for Wedding
This is the Amscan Ornate Premium disposable plastic plate. It has this gorgeous gold scalloped detail. It retails for cad$22.99 for a set of 10, which is about $2.30 per person.

Pair the plates with this Amscan Gold Plastic Flatware, set of 32, which is good for 8 people. Comes to about $1.75 per set per person.

The Pro’s

1: NOT FLIMSY

Not super bad. Not super strong either. The knife does not cut through anything. Honestly, the plastic knife from the food court cuts better! I’ve cut pretty tough Kabobs using those! *lol!*

Consider what you are serving when using these plastic utensils; even if they seem like the best disposable plates for your wedding, these are still plasticware. If you are serving pasta with smaller cuts of meat, then it should be manageable. But if you are looking to serve larger meat cuts, these things will definitely not cut through them. Choose your entrees wisely.

2: NOT LIGHT

It is quite heavier than your average plastic plate from the dollar store, which is why they are called “premium” *lol!* It has that weight that makes it feel like a real plate. (almost!)

3: NICE FINISH

It has a flat white finish. It is almost matte and not really shiny, which is always a good thing as it almost has this “real china” look to it!

4: COMES WITH A SET!

This plate comes with a matching set! It has an appetizer plate that you can use to layer on top of the dinner plate or separately for appetizers or desserts! If you’re looking for the best disposable plates for your wedding, find the ones that can come in a set, so it won’t be hard to match them! Your wedding will look more cohesive if they are all in the same style and color/shade!

5: GOLD DOES NOT LOOK TACKY.

The gold color around the edges does not look tacky at all. It is a classy finish gold.

The Con/s

Now we only have one con. Which is a MAJOR CON.

** It is still plastic! **

No matter how great it looks from afar, it is still plastic when you lift and touch it. If you despise that plastic feel, then this is not for you!

Can be good for

1: Light food servings, cocktail events, and loungey vibes. Especially for smaller events where there is no need to clear the tables right away, there are only a few meal options. Guests usually are walking around or are not sitting at the dinner table for a long time.

COCKTAIL SANDWICH STATION: ELEVATE & ENJOY

2: Events at your house or at a rented space where time and space are limited. Because this is such an easy and quick set-up and clean-up, there is no need for storage, assembly, and handling space.

Creative Tips

1: When choosing the best disposable plastic plates for your wedding, especially if you want some accent colors like gold or silver, ensure that you choose products with the same shade.

The way the shades will match is crucial in ensuring that you have cohesiveness in your styling. If you are spending the money on these, you might also spend it creatively and elevate it!

2: An approach we’d like to share is not to treat them like they are plastic. Place and set them up on each place, setting them as if they are real china! Don’t stack them on the side and let people pick them up themselves! If you do that, you are better off saving an extra $$ buying the dollar store plates!

These are “premium” and supposed to be the best disposable plates for your wedding, and if you are already spending on them, you might as well treat them like real china! Set them up on the table as part of the tablescape styling! They are not real china, but they are still pretty, and you’ve spent a good amount of $$ on them!

3: Another design tip is to elevate the set-up’s look and feel by adding some cute napkin details cohesive with your theme. Examples of how to make this work is up on our YouTube review video.

Use dinner napkins (paper!) that are long as opposed to the square cocktail ones! Again, elevate the look and treat it like real china and a real fabric napkin!

Conclusion

Is it worth the price? Are they really the best disposable plates for your wedding?

Yes. For the convenience alone, it is definitely worth the price.

Are they the best disposable plates for your wedding? Probably. This all depends on your vibe and wedding goal. It is still plastic, but these are not tacky and cheap-looking.

The style? For a plastic plate? It’s not bad at all! It’s actually fairly stylish and elegant!

This is definitely a good DIY product for a DIY event. Like what we always say here, you can elevate any DIY event as long as you style and use products creatively! And we’re always here to help you do just that!

As mentioned earlier, we acknowledge that plastic wares tend to be wasteful; however, the reality is these products are still worth considering if you are on a tight budget but still would like to have a “close to a real china” feel to your wedding.

We do not always suggest plasticware, but we understand that you might want to consider it an alternative to real china if you are extra budget-conscious. Choose wisely and do what works for you best while being eco-conscious.
